Description
Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 Magnetic Thickness Gauge
Long Description
MAGNA-MIKE 8600 Magnetic Thickness Gauge is a portable magnetic thickness measurement instrument designed to measure the wall thickness of non-ferrous materials such as plastic, glass, aluminum, and composite materials. Developed by Olympus Corporation (now part of Evident Scientific), the Magna-Mike 8600 uses Hall-effect magnetic technology to deliver accurate and repeatable thickness measurements without damaging the test material.
The device operates by placing a small magnetic target ball, disk, or wire on one side of the test material while a magnetic probe is placed on the opposite side. The probe’s Hall-effect sensor measures the distance between the probe tip and the magnetic target, instantly calculating the material thickness and displaying the result on the instrument’s color screen.
The Magna-Mike 8600 offers a wide measurement range from approximately 0.001 mm up to 25.4 mm (1 in.), making it suitable for thin plastic packaging as well as thicker industrial components. The instrument also features a large VGA color display, fast measurement update rate of up to 60 Hz, and an internal alphanumeric data logger for recording inspection results.
Designed for industrial inspection and quality control, the gauge supports multiple probe designs (straight, right-angle, and low-profile articulating probes) and interchangeable wear caps to adapt to different measurement conditions. Data can be exported via USB, RS-232, or MicroSD card, enabling easy transfer to spreadsheets and inspection software for analysis and reporting.
Because of its portability and high precision, the Magna-Mike 8600 is widely used in packaging quality control, aerospace manufacturing, automotive parts inspection, and container wall thickness measurement where conventional ultrasonic gauges cannot be used effectively.
