Description

The Olympus MultiScan MS5800 is a versatile multi-technology nondestructive testing (NDT) instrument designed for advanced tube inspection, corrosion detection, and weld evaluation in industrial environments. Developed by Olympus Corporation (now part of Evident Scientific), the MS5800 integrates several inspection technologies in a single system, allowing technicians to perform detailed analysis of tubing used in heat exchangers, boilers, condensers, and power-generation equipment.

This Olympus – MS5800 modular inspection system combines Eddy Current Testing (ECT), Remote Field Testing (RFT), Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), and ultrasonic IRIS (Internal Rotating Inspection System) technologies. Each technique targets different materials and defect types, enabling the instrument to detect corrosion, erosion, pitting, cracks, wear, and wall-thickness loss in both ferrous and non-ferrous tubes.

The MS5800 is widely used for automated tube inspection programs, where high-speed data acquisition and multi-channel capability are essential. It can operate with up to four eddy-current inputs and as many as 64 multiplexed channels, allowing array probes to inspect large surfaces faster than conventional single-channel systems.

For ultrasonic testing, the system supports IRIS technology, which rotates an ultrasonic probe inside the tube to produce detailed wall-thickness measurements and high-resolution C-scan images. This method is particularly effective for detecting corrosion-related wall loss in heat exchanger tubes and boiler systems.

The instrument connects to a computer via Ethernet and operates with Olympus MultiView™ software, enabling real-time data acquisition, analysis, and storage. The software also allows inspectors to generate reports, visualize defects, and perform detailed inspection planning for complex tube sheets and piping systems.

Designed for field and industrial use, the MultiScan MS5800 features a rugged portable design with operating temperatures from −20 °C to 45 °C and a maximum weight of approximately 12.8 kg depending on installed modules.
